Mari Lwyd - A Historical Tradition in Modern Day

The Winter tradition of Mari Lwyd was one that I grew up hearing a lot about. Historically, it would include a group of people going door to door in their towns, championing a decorated horse skull, singing Welsh songs in an attempt to convince the people of the homes to allow the Mari entry.

During December 2019, I set off to a number of modern Mari Lwyd events to document and learn more about how we celebrate this act in modern day. From a tiny church service in mid-Wales to a jovial pub crawl in London, I deeply enjoyed seeing how we keep the tradition alive.
